American – Australian Martial Arts Exchange 'Report'
Early Sunday morning Melbourne University Sports Stadium came alive with the bellowing voices of dedicated athletes practising the smooth calculated moves of martial arts.
The Americans had arrived, yes 28 of them to be exact. They have starting with Melbourne as the first leg of their Australia tour. Grandmaster Clifford Crandall Jr lead the American Team of 22 black belts to present Katas and applications from the America Eagle style of martial arts. Upon their entrance to the arena they were met with a loud and warm reception from the waiting 40 odd Australian seminar participants.
After introductions, acknowledgements and warm ups the show was on the go with Grandmaster Clifford Crandall Jr taking the entire group through a few basics to make sure we were all warmed up. Grandmaster Crandall Jr felt right at home co ordinating this event as he has arranged so many demonstration teams around the world in the past. If we were to go into his achievements and contributions to the arts we would need a lot more space, so I suggest you visit his website and read it for yourself.
Next the US Team moved on to a well organised presentation of several forms. The exhibition by several team members was performed by each person executing a different form simultaneously take up the entire stadium. This gave spectators the opportunity to see several forms in the least amount of time. There was no time for any breaks as there was so much to get through in so little time. Our international guests dominated the proceedings with their enthusiasm to share their art. However we did get to show some of what the Aussies can do too.

Soke Tony Ball was the first Aussie on the floor a well accomplished competitor and headmaster of Fundoshin Martial Arts. Soke Ball performed a well executed form to the delights of the audience and then called in Daniel one of his students for some self defence drills using the short stick (jo). Josh another of Soke's students perform a free form ki kata to complete Fundoshin's presentation.
Shihan Terry Bradford another very seasoned competitor and Chief Instructor of Okinawan Goju Karate performed a crowd pleasing performance of Seisan Kata. Shihan Bradford's focus, power and fluidity exposed the obvious years of dedicated study to reach such a level of perfection.
Next Shihan Alex Albert (Chief Inst MUKC) asked a graduate of Melbourne University Karate Club Sempai Diane Rivo to perform a kata. Sempai Rivo performed her form without a clinch. Her kata showed excellent speed and power especially for such a petite frame.
Grandmaster Crandall Jr was back on the floor coordinating more demonstrations with the US team. This time our visitors were using an arsenal of weapons including Sai, Tonfa, Nagnata, Katana, Bo and a cane.
The final section of the exchange was to break into two groups and learn some self defence drills SG1/SG2 and the other group had the opportunity to learn a weapon. Unfortunately time ran out so we had to make do with going to lunch and chewing the fat for many hours at a local restaurant in Carlton .
Many thanks go out to Grandmaster Crandall , Master Hillcross and the US Team for sharing their time with us, Shihan Albert for booking the venue, Soke Ball for initiating the exchange and for the Shihan Slater for coordinating the event.
The event was captured on video and a DVD production will be produced and available for sale shortly. We are waiting for a pile of photos to come in so we can include a slide show on the disc as well.
Contact IMA for details shortly (cost $25.00).
